Growing up, Tyler has been active in sports from pretty much day one, having played baseball, cbasketball, football and tennis to go along with other outdoor hobbies such as fishing. Last summer while throwing the football around with me in the backyard, I noticed that I heard a noise coming from Tyler’s shoulder each time he threw the ball. We started talking more and decided it was time to get him looked at before the upcoming sports season. Rather than going to other orthopedic doctors in the area, Tyler’s Mother and I decided to take him straight to Dr. Foad based on his reputation in the community and feedback we’d received from family members with experience with him. This turned out to be the best choice we could possibly have made. The one thing that struck me immediately upon meeting Dr. Foad is how he takes his time to getto know the patient as well as the family. In my experience, most doctors are in a hurry to get you in and get you out so they can move on to the next patient. That is certainly not the case with Dr. Foad. The extra time spent helps instill a sense of trust. After his clinical examination and subsequent imaging, it was determined that Tyler had a SLAP tear that needed to be repaired. Dr. Foad took the time to discuss Tyler’s priorities for the upcoming year to create a timeline of care that would have him ready to go for the spring tennis season. While it was hard for him to miss a full season of basketball, we were confident in Dr. Foad’s assessment of the scope of the injury and the time needed to recover. Following surgery, Dr. Foad set Tyler up to work with Brad Harper for his physical therapy. I can tell you that you’d be hard pressed to find a better tandem to work through a recovery. Brad is the most kind and knowledgeable physical therapist I’ve ever been around. One meeting with him and I knew Tyler was in great hands. Right on schedule, Tyler was able to start the tennis season this spring and is enjoying a great season thanks to the work of Dr. Foad and Brad Harper. To everyone on Dr. Foad’s team, from the nurses to reception team, THANK YOU! Joe Hoerschelmann (Father of Tyler Hoerschelmann)

I cannot thank Dr. Foad enough for what he did for me as a young man and as an athlete. When I initially injured my shoulder, I was a sophomore starting on the varsity football team on both offense and defense, having a great season. I did PT and felt strong enough to continue with wrestling season. However, the second injury following the initial caused the biggest amount of harm and the only solution was surgery with Dr. Foad. It was a devastating injury as a young, multi-sport athlete. My social circle was sports oriented, my activity levels revolved around sports, and I felt a huge sense of loss about what I was going to do in my high school years if I couldn’t play sports. Surgery was intense and I ended up with eight bone anchors in my right shoulder, my dominant shoulder. One of the most impactful conversations Dr. Foad had with me actually occurred prior to surgery when he asked me to prioritize my sports as he explained that my shoulder would no longer be God given, it was now going to be man-made. I let that conversation sink in and explained that wrestling was my passion and he asked me what my goal was. Hearing such a question from my surgeon showed me just how much Dr. Foad really gets it, and shows how much he really cares. My goal wasn’t just to fix my shoulder and live without pain, it was to return to the mat better than I was before, and he wanted to help me achieve my goal. Dr. Foad was an athlete in school himself, maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle and the relationship that he builds with his patients shows a lot of understanding and empathy of what we are experiencing and feeling after suffering an injury and building ourselves back. This sets him apart from all the others. When I started my PT, first thing they said was that patients who are under the care plan of Dr. Foad heal much quicker with a slower chance of re-injury than other patients, because of his detailed, thorough therapy plans. Every follow up appointment was with Dr. Foad himself, not another member of his team and this was another way he showed how much he cared and how he was working with me towards achieving my goal. I finished my junior year wrestling season with a record of 31-12 and earned a 2nd place finish in the MAC Conference Championship. I’m continuing that journey and working towards big things my senior year. I’m very grateful to Dr. Foad for giving me what I needed to help me achieve my goal and highly recommend him to other patients and athletes who want to have the same experience.

Kamdyn is an amazing young man with true grit and dedication to his sport. He is going to do great things on and off the mat. Thank you Dawn (Mother of Kamdyn)you’re your kind testimonial below! “Kamdyn is an amazing athlete. He won Iowa AAU state wrestling his 8th grade year. His freshman year he dislocated his shoulder in football. He battled with the pain until it dislocated again during wrestling. Our chiropractor told us about Dr. Foad so we made an appointment. We were so pleased with the friendly staff and Dr. Foad's bedside manner! We scheduled arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder. When we arrived at the hospital it was nice to see some familiar faces, he has a great team that is always with him! Kamdyn had extensive damage and had to have seven anchors. He is six weeks post op currently and is in no pain at all! He is progressing wonderfully! Kamdyn is looking forward to getting back on the mat and chasing his dreams of being a Hawkeye wrestler!”

Before December 2021, I was an elite-level catcher with a bright future ahead of me. Unfortunately playing basketball, I suffered a knee injury that was going to require total ACL reconstruction and repair of the meniscus on both sides of my knee. Before I met Dr. Foad, I thought my catching days were over. He was so personable and confident in his ability, that I knew I was in great hands. After almost a year of rehabilitation, I made it back to the field only to endure another injury, a torn labrum in my throwing shoulder. Once again, Dr. Foad performed my surgery and with 7 more months of rehabilitation, I am back on the field doing what I love. Sometimes I thought my softball days were over, but thanks to Dr. Foad, I will play D1 softball this Fall 2024. Thank you Dr. Foad, I am extremely grateful and proud to call you my surgeon.

Four Generations of Medical Care by Dr. Foad: I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Foad when he was associated with the Burlington Orthopaedic group 25 years ago. I had a minor elbow injury which he immediately recognized. I was so impressed with the care I received I referred my father for a knee replacement. Not only did he replace my father’s knees he also suggested he see a neurologist for tremors he was having in his feet. My dad was later diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Foad was so kind and attentive during all examinations my family held him in high regard. I have been seen by Dr. Foad several times over the years, including his Keokuk and Clinton locations. Dr. Foad repaired a torn meniscus in my left knee in 2010 and also discovered I had a fracture, something the radiologist missed. I drove from Fort Madison to Clinton for that particular procedure. My daughter was recently referred to Minneapolis by Dr. Foad for the best surgeon he knew that could perform the surgery she needed, which was a surgery Dr. Foad doesn’t do. Dr. Foad is handling her follow-up treatment. I have recently had total knee replacements for both knees by Dr. Foad. No question my first and only choice was Dr. Foad. While I am still recovering, I am more than satisfied with the care that I continue to receive from Dr. Foad. I currently live in the QC area and anytime I run into him, be it football field, basketball court, or a restaurant he always has time for a hug, a chat and addresses any concerns I may have no matter what the subject might be. I consider him a very special friend as well as my favorite doctor! The compassion he shows his patients, that contagious smile, and the care he has provided me with over the years is second to none. Dr. Foad always strives to be the best he can be, and has now seen four generations in my family. I just can’t say enough about Dr. Foad. I highly recommend him to friends, family and sometimes even a stranger. It is such a comfort to know that I have quality medical care with Dr. Foad. Sandra Fraise
